Ground source heat pumps provide one of the most efficient ways of heating and cooling properties using renewable energy. Not only are they ideally suited for new properties with underfloor heating, but can also be considered for retrofits.

Ground source heat pumps are seen as new technology, however they are seen as established technology in many other parts of Europe – for example in Switzerland 1 in 3 new homes incorporate the use of ground source heat pumps. Many industrial and commercial buildings also feature geothermal heating.

Heat pumps are, in fact, very common and proven; there is one in every refrigerator. Like a refrigerator, Ground Source Heat Pumps transfer heat from one point to another. In this case, underground is like the inside of the refrigerator, and the heat is pumped away from the ground to the building to provide space heating and hot water. The system can also be reversed to cool the building and transfer the heat back into the ground.
