Ground source heat pumps obtain approximately 75% of the energy required for heating from the environment. The remaining 25% is drawn from the electricity main to power the compressor within the heat pump. Since that electrical power will also finally be converted into heat, it too can be utilised for heating purposes.
The Coefficient of Performance (COP) is a ratio between the transferred heating energy and the energy used to power the heat pump; a COP of 4 is shown in the image; i.e. 4kW of heating from 1kW of electrical energy to drive the heat pump.

“Over 70% saving – 4 to 1 - Geothermal heating through ground source heat pumps is very efficient. 4 times more heat is delivered, than electrical energy used to power the heat pump itself”
